Pat Williams Racing Update: With the success of the first shown (#134) below 2.61 litre twin turbo, Pat Willams Racing has done it again. This time, it is in a Factory 1997 RSR. An ex-Alex Job factory 1997 3.8 RSR pro-class machine, we performed a Florida onsite inspection before purchase, arranged post purchase transportation to the Memphis and rebuilt every system/powertrain, upgraded the original engine mgmt to PWR-EFI-II and installed a full Moton based suspension. Two very successful seasons with over 15 wins in 18 starts for 2005 - here's Road Atlanta's Results - in PCA/NASA/PBOC and no failures later, the owner wants some of what the only other racer to pass him on regular occassion has, namely a 2.61litre twin turbo like Barry Base's #134 car. Not only will he have more power, he'll be able to drop down a class from GT2 to GT3 where the fields are larger and the racing even tighter. We will build, install, test this powerplant and be ready for the Road Atlanta PCA race in April. Designed as a more affordable version of the #134 car's engine, this one will vary slightly in the use of more off the shelf componentry, primarily on the induction side and revs will be limited to 8,000rpm. Major component specs will be the following:
PWR 2.61 Twin Turbo
And here is the original 2.61TT done by Pat Williams Racing: Builder Bio: Pat Williams, Pat Williams Racing
You've seen Ronnie Randall's green #8 GT4R car that was built entirely at PWR. It has not only dominated GT4R but has many overall PCA club racing wins including it's last time out at Mardi Gras where it qualified first, won overall, set fastest lap and garnered the corner worker's award. Now follow along on our latest large scale project as we build another racecar from the ground up for another one of our customers, Barry Bays, currently racing in PCA F Class - from the most unlikely candidate, a water logged 1976 911S Targa - for the GT3R class again utilizing a unique powerplant, a 3.2 based 2.61 twin turbo.
PCA Club racing is the largest single marque amateur club racing series in the world. No where else can participants routinely race alongside seasoned professionals and teams on circuits they've viewed on television while doing so in the comfort of the PCA environment they are familiar with. Run groups of 75 cars are not uncommon on the larger tracks, weekend formats now include Sprints as well as 1.5 hour Enduros, and classes cover an extraordinary range - accomodating less than 100hp mid 50's 356 based machines to 800+ hp ex-Group 5 and mid engine prototypes - there is something for everyone. With upwards of 300 participants and often 4 days of nonstop action, this environment, though exhillirating, can be especially intense and demanding on a participant mastering a new car or combination. When a customer commissions building of a car, we are very mindful of both their previous race experience as well as the level of vehicle they are transitioning from/to. As previously mentioned, Depending on the class change/owner experience, we can transition our owners in steps with chassis setup - and in the case of turbo charged vehicles, boost levels - towards more aggressive settings as the owner acclimatizes themselves and their lap times go down. In this case for the 2.61tt, with our suspension development experience we have intially set this car up ’soft’, mimicking the initial roll characteristics of Barry's F class car and installed 70% of-optimum springs to help telegraph weight transfer.
Sebring was used as test by PWR to dial in this transition setup. Texas (Lone Star) was the Barry's first time in the car - or on slicks in a turbocharged car and at that track, for that matter - the event was run on non-optimum tires so the he could probe limit adhesion at lower chassis loading levels. He came away with the GT3R win ahead several cars from much higher classes. For Road Atlanta, Pat participated in the sprint race to finalize the more aggressive chassis setup for PWR-EFI map-2 and Mid Ohio was Barry's first sprint qualifying/race in which he won GT3R.
The 2.61tt was selected among 210 cars entered in this event by the PCA officials for the Worker’s Choice Award by virtue of the car’s design, preparation, performance and general “look”. It also closed a 15 second gap to the leader on the way to fininishing second in the sprint race by .154 seconds. Watch an exciting video of 2 laps of pre-qualifying. Watch and listen to a run to 8,500rpm on the dyno here. Builder Bio: David Finch,
